Temperament And Personality Of A American Staffordshire Terrier

Courageous and strong, the American Staffordshire Terrier “Am Staff”‘s athletic build and intelligence make him ideally suited to many dog sports such as obedience, agility, tracking and conformation. He is often identified by his stocky body and strong, powerful head.
let’s talk about his personality: Loyal, fun and loving, fearless and affectionate, American Staffordshire Terriers sometimes called Amstaffs bring great joy to their families. Often confused with Pit Bull Terriers, the two breeds share an ancestral bloodline and were originally bred to fight, but the American Staffordshire line has become much more gentle in the last 100 years. Despite their reputation as an aggressive breed, The Amstaff is a true family dog. Loving and playful, this breed will play with children in the yard, then happily snuggle with mom and dad on the couch. Also the American Staffordshire Terrier is generally of larger bone structure, head size and weight then its cousin the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Height, Weight
Height: Males 17 – 19 inches (43 – 48 cm) Females 16 – 18 inches (41 – 46 cm)

Weight: 57 – 67 pounds (25 – 30 kg)

Activity Requirements

This Pet require daily exercise to maintain their muscle tone. They enjoy long walks and playing in the yard. Because of their need for activity, they are best suited for a home with a fenced-in yard with plenty of room to run and play fetch. If raised alongside other animals, a well-bred American Staffordshire Terrier will do fine, but if adopting an older dog, it’s best the family not have other pets. Even the most gentle Staffordshire can attack if challenged by another animal, or if he fears his owner is in danger.

Health Problems
Some are prone to heart murmurs, thyroid problems, skin allergies, tumors, hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts and congenital heart disease. Also Ataxia, which is a very serious health problem in the breed. There is a genetic test for ataxia through a company called Optigen. If you are looking for an AmStaff it is wise to ask any breeder if their puppies are guaranteed free of ataxia or not. Its a recessive trait, so if 1 parent is tested Ataxia clear then they can safely know that the puppy won’t be affected by the disease.

Amstaffs are strong-willed dogs, so training requires a lot of confidence and patience. They should be trained and socialized as early as possible – every well behaved American Staffordshire Terrier is a goodwill ambassador for the breed. Positive reinforcement should be employed as the training method for an Amstaff, as harsh discipline can lead to mistrust.

Living Conditions
Staffordshire Terriers will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are very active indoors and will do alright without a yard. This breed prefers warm climates.

– This breed should be treated as a family member, and never left tied up alone, outside. Serious behavioral problems and aggression can develop if an Amstaff is neglected and left without the company of loving humans.
